Joint Cadets of the Year!
In over 20 years Commanding Officer Flt Lt Gary Harding has never known two cadets jointly winning the Cadet of the Year award!
This is only the second year that 2498 Totton Squadron has run a Cadet of the Year competition. The scheme at 2498 runs on a points basis with cadets accumalating points for attendance, various activities and achievements throughout the year.
Once the total was tallied up we were amazed to find we had a joint winner! Just by sheer luck the prize for the Cadet of the Year this year had been extended to include the runner up!
The joint winners were Cdt Flight Sergeant Dale Murrey and Cdt Sergeant Charley Harding. They were presented with their prizes by Captain Heather Moody who is a commercial airline pilot with Flybe flying out of Southampton airport. Heather was an air cadet herself and proved to be a great inspiration to the cadets and parents at the Squadrons presentation evening.
The Cadet of the Year prize was a hands-on Puma helicopter simulator flight in the Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility at RAF Benson, Oxfordshire. Neither cadet had ever had hands-on flying a helicopter but learned very quickly indeed despite being thrown in at the deep end alongside a training captain.
Cdt Sergeant Charley Harding commented: "it was very complicated, weird and very interesting having the different controls to fly with, but a very enjoyable experience".
