ACO National Marching Band Camp
Prince William of Gloucester Barracks in Grantham was recently the home for 76 Air Cadet Musicians who have formed the 2011 National Marching Band. Musical Instruction was given by Air Cadet Staff. Four cadets from Hampshire & IOW Wing Sgt Josh Humphrey 2412 Bordon & District Sqn, Cpl Hannah Matthews 1927 Petersfield Sqn, Cpl Lucinda Rhodes 457 Farnborough Sqn and Cdt Angus Odling 1216 Eastleigh Sqn, along with the Wing Music Officer Flt Lt Pat Phillips and CI Sophie Wood were in attendance.
Musical training throughout the week consisted of cadets learning pieces such as Army of the Nile, Band of Brothers, Cockleshell Heroes and Raiders March as well as Rule Brittania, Jerusalem, Land of Hope & Glory and I Vow to thee my Country.
The main performance was held on the Friday at the RAF Museum Duxford where the band performed two twenty minute sets in front of a crowd of parents and visitors. The second performance was held on Saturday 23rd April where the band performed at Twickenham Stadium for the London Wasps vs Bath Rugby Charity match in front of 40,000 people and was also televised on Sky Sports 1.
Particular congratulations go to Cpl Hannah Matthews who was awarded best instrumentalist of the week and to Cpl Lucinda Rhodes who was appointed principal flute player.
The next camp will be held in July where the band will be performing on the Orange at RAF College Cranwell for a National Youth Day and will be providing a display at the Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford.
