Cadet wins UK Athletics Young Official of the Year
At the UK Officials Conference in Solihull recently the UK Athletics Young Official of the Year Award for 2011 was presented to Cadet Flight Sergeant Calum Piper from 2407 Yateley & Eversley Squadron. The presentation was made by Niels de Vos, the Chief Executive of UK Athletics.
Flt Sgt Piper qualified as a Grade 4 Track Official in December 2005 at the age of 14 and proceeded to qualify as a Grade 3 in the following November. Even in those early days he was identified by UKA officials as having the potential to go a long way.
In July 2010 he was upgraded to Level 2 Region and was added to the SEAA Regional list where he did an excellent job as Track Steward. He is also a Level 2 Club Endurance Official and has already taken the Level 3 Track Course but unfortunately University has got in the way of immediate progress.
His role at athletics meetings is as a track judge which involves judging the race finishes, providing the position order and umpiring the races to ensure athletes stay in their lanes. At the bigger meets there is also technical equipment, such as a wind gauge and photo finish, to operate.
Flt Sgt Piper has assisted many Air Cadet athletics events at Wing and Region level in the past and is one of our most qualified officials.
