Ella Prinsep has been an Air Cadet for less than 6 months, but already has a National reputation as a very competitive athlete.
Romsey School pupil Ella, at just 13, first came to fame in May, when she won two gold medals in the Hampshire & Isle of Wight ATC Athletics, for the junior girls 300 metres and the 1500 metres. Later that month she improved on this by winning three gold medals in the South West of England Regional ATC Athletics Championships, for the junior girls 300 metres, 1500 metres, and the 5 x 400 relay.
Her crowning achievements came last weekend at RAF Cosford. This RAF station has a fantastic indoor Athletics Arena, perhaps best known as being the place that Seb Coe ( Lord Coe of 2012 Olympics fame) set the 800metres world record in 1981. Last weekend it hosted the ATC National Athletics Championships, where Ella was one of some 30 cadets in the SW England team, competing against the top 300 cadets in the UK. And her medal tally for this event? – just FOUR! Ella won a Gold in her 300metre race, Silver in both the 1500 metres and the 5 x 400 relay, and a Bronze in the 4 x 100 relay.
Apart from the medal successes, Ella had a really good weekend all round. “We stayed in Officers Mess Annexe accommodation on the base, and I had a super room, and the food was excellent. However, the absolute BEST part for me was the Final Parade and Presentations; all of the Athletes marched into the parade area behind an ATC Band, to form up on three sides of the Parade Square. Then the Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, spoke to all the winners in turn and presented us with our medals. I also won a silver trophy for being the 300 metres winner.”
