Cdt Flight Sergeant Horrocks of 2412(Bordon & District) Squadron applied in March 2012 to Headquarters Air Cadets to get a place on the prestigious Air Cadet Pilot Scheme run by Tayside Aviation in Dundee. Through a rigorous application process he was selected to undergo training this year!

One year and 370 miles later Cdt FS Horrocks arrived in Dundee. He was greeted with stereotypical Scottish weather, it was snowing and the winds were almost 25 MPH. But the welcome at the Landmark Hotel in Dundee was much warmer than the weather outside.

At 0700 the next morning following full English breakfast, and haggis, Cdt FS Horrocks and the rest of the course members were transported to Dundee Airport. Here they were greeted by the Chief Flying Instructor with the unfortunate news that there would be no flying on that day. They were however given a tour of the airfield which included the hanger that held all of the cadet aircraft.

The next day the snow held off long enough for Cdt FS Horrocks to get his first proper flying lesson under the Air Cadet Pilot Scheme. When not flying the aircraft the students were taught the basics of powered flight and Radio Telecoms.

With the weather changing significantly at the end of the week the flying training was ramped up so Cdt FS Horrocks could take off and fly the aircraft himself, with less help from the instructor.

Towards the middle of the week he started the final stages of the flying training and transferred into circuit training and fully taking off and landing the aircraft.

Cdt FS Horrocks completed his first ever powered solo flight in a Grob 115D2 Heron with the registration G-BVHF.
Cdt FS Horrocks said 'Overall I found this to be a fantastic course and would strongly recommend any cadet who has done the Gliding scholarship to apply.
This course alone shows how unique and fantastic the Air Cadet Organisation is'
